Ancient Architecture

The image shows an ancient stone carving from the Sri Sundara Kamakshi Amman Temple in Sirukarumbur, Tamil Nadu. It is notable for its detailed depiction of a fetus in the womb. 
The carving is estimated to be at least 800 years old, dating back to the Chola period. 
It is believed by some to be evidence of the advanced anatomical knowledge possessed by ancient Indian architects and sages. 
The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, with the mother goddess Sundara Kamakshi given prominence. 
The Garbh Upanishad, an ancient Hindu text, also contains descriptions of embryology and fetal development, providing a potential textual basis for such knowledge.
