Let’s start the day with Homi & J. B. H. Wadia’s 1960 drama film *”Duniya Jhukti Hai”* directed by J. B. H. Wadia.
The film starred Sunil Dutt and Shyama. They were supported by Kum Kum, B. M. Vyas, Wasti, Agha and Daisy Irani.
In old Hindi movies, especially those of 1950s and 1960s, we often see songs picturised on “Taanga”
The beats of the horse was made famous by the great O. P. Nayyar when he gave one of his musician 2 shells of dried coconut and asked him to imitate the rhythm of the horse’s gait.
“Taanga” was actually a mode of public transport in India those days. With time, Taanga has all but vanished as a mode of public transport in India. But they have not become extinct. One can still find them in some small towns of India.
The most famous Tanga in Hindi films belonged to Basanti drawn by her Dhanno. Epic.
In Hindi movies, “Taanga” songs were often songs full of enthusiasm and joie de vivre, where the singer would sing an upbeat song seated beside the driver, with a lady seated in the rear would look on approvingly.
Here is a nice and rare Taanga song from “Duniya Jhukti Hai”. The song is sung by Rafi. It is lip synced by Sunil Dutt, with Agha being the taanga driver.
Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hemant Kumar.
*” Phoolon Se Dosti Hai”* lyrics by Rajinder Krishan, composed by Hemant Kumar and sung by Mohammed Rafi 🎤🎵🎶🎧
