Song of the Day
Let’s start the day and week with Muzaffar Ali’s 1981 period musical drama film *” Umrao Jaan”* written and directed by Muzaffar Ali.
The film starred Rekha. She was supported by Farooq Shaikh, Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Ishtiaque Khan, Gajanan Jagirdar, Shaukat Kaifi, Dina Pathak, Prema Narayan, Bharat Bhushan, Mukri and Satish Shah.
Umrao Jaan is considered at par with other cult classics such as Pakeezah (1972) and is widely acclaimed as one of India's great cinematic magnum opuses.
Rekha wore her own costumes and jewelry for the movie due to budget constraints. The success of Khubsoorat and Umrao Jaan established Rekha, with whom Amitabh had stopped signing movies, as the top heroine of the first half of 1980s.
The film was almost shelved due to lack of financing but Muzaffar Ali completed this celebrated film despite all difficulties. Once released, Rekha and Asha Bhosle won National awards for the film in the best actress and best female singer categories.
The song ” In aankhon ki masti” has become so popular that it has to be perhaps the most well known Mujra song of all time in Bollywood. The lyrics of Shahariar may go over the heads of most listeners, but they sound so sweet and meaningful, and that is what matters to the listeners. Asha Bhonsle, known for singing mainly fast songs, sang this song with great passion. And Khayyam, who tended to get just a few movies in a decade, made the most of this opportunity and came up with memorable music in this movie.
The song was of course picturised on Rekha, with Farooque Sheikh as the decadant Lucknowi nawab listeing to this mujra.
