Song of the Day

Let’s start Sunday with one of my favourite, Raj Khosla & Jal Mistry’s 1960 drama film *”Bombai Ka Babu”* directed by Raj Khosla.

The film starred Dev Anand & Suchitra Sen. They were supported by Jeevan, Nazir Hussein, Dhumal, Manohar Deepak, Achala Sachdev, Jagdish Raj, Rashid Khan, Bela Bose and Tun Tun.

Except for the "brother-sister" angle, the plot of Bombai Ka Babu is inspired by O. Henry's short story, "A Double-Dyed Deceiver".

What an interesting twist of Brother & Sister, was given to the story written by Rajinder Singh Bedi.

Initially, Madhubala was the choice for playing the female lead, but she had to withdraw owing to her poor heart condition.

Suchitra Sen dragged Raj Khosla to court over the film. During the shoot, the unit was put up at a hotel. At night Suchitra and her husband were unable to sleep as Raj Khosla and a bunch of friends were having a party next door. The noise was unbearable. Suchitra finally barged into the room and told Khosla to knock it off as she had enough. Raj Khosla yelled and Suchitra and told her to get lost. The next morning Suchitra packed her bags and left for Calcutta leaving the film incomplete. She later dragged Raj Khosla to court for money owed to her. Khosla counter sued saying she was yet to complete the film and causing losses. Finally the court ordered in Raj Khosla's favor and Suchitra had to finish the film.

On 100th birth anniversary of Raj Khosla film was screened at Mumbai's Regal cinema on 31st May 2025.

One may mistake today’s song  for an O P Nayyar composition. Punjabi sounding tunes and picturised on girls wearing Punjabi dresses, and sung by Asha Bhonsle- how can it be otherwise ?

But no, this catchy and racy tune was composed by S D Burman, assisted by his son R D Burman.

And pray who is that bubbly Punjabi looking girl teasing Dev Anand ? Look again, it is Suchitra Sen, known to the present generation as the grandmom of Rea and Raima Sen and mother of Moon Moon Sen.

*"Dekhne Mein Bhola Hai"* lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri, composed by S D Burman and sung by Asha Bhosle 🎤🎵🎶🎧
