श्यामा हेम्मादी (चित्तार) Shyama Hemmady (Chittar) (21 August 1942 - 20 December 2009) was a singer. She sung songs in Marathi & Hindi films, non filmi songs in many languages . She was sister of famous singer Suman Kalyanpur. Compiled by Suresh Sarvaiya
Shyama Chittar was born as Shyama Hemady or Hemadi on 21 August 1942 in Dhaka, Bengal Presidency, undivided India now in Bangladesh. Her father Shankar Rao Hemadi hailed from an elite Saraswat Brahmin family belonging to Mangalore, Karnataka. Hemmady is a village in Kundapur Taluk of Udupi District in the State of Karnataka. He served on a top post in the Central Bank of India and was posted to Dhaka (now Bangladesh) for a very long period. Apart from father and mother Seeta Hemmady, there were 5 daughters and one son in the family with Shyama. Compiled by Suresh Sarvaiya
In 1943, her family moved to Bombay (Mumbai), where she received her musical training. Shyama was inspired by her mother to learn music. She got classical music training from Baburao Gokhale, Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan & Keshavrao Bhole. She learnt Urdu writing & speaking from Ishaq Patel. Shyama won many prizes for her singing during annual functions at her school & college and during Ganapati Utsav. Shyama passed Gandharv Mahavidhyalaya exam with top rank.
Shyama recorded her first song in Marathi at the age of 8 under the music direction of Sudhir Phadake. After she sang songs in many Marathi movies. She was A grade singer with Akashavani (All India Radio). Apart from Marathi, Shyama sang songs in Hindi, Konkani, Sindhi, Bhojpuri, Dongari & Kannad languages. She was married and after marriage she was known as Shyama Chittar.
Shyama Chittar (Hemady) died on 20 December 2009.
