Musical Comedy *” Padosan”*

Let’s start Sunday with Mehmood & N. C. Sippy’s 1969 musical comedy *” Padosan”* directed by Jyoti Swaroop.

The film starred Sunil Dutt & Saira Banu. They were superbly supported by Mehmood, OmPrakash, Dulari, Sunder, Agha, Mukri, Keshto Mukerjee, Raj Kishore and Kishore Kumar.

This is my favourite comic song from Padosan (1968). It is simple and still so funny.

I knew a Bindu during my college days and this song used to be played in my mind whenever I saw her 😉 my friend was so smitten by her but was to shy to talk to her, at his request I introduced myself and then introduced my friend. This is another reason this song is special.

Bholaa (Sunil Dutt) has fallen in love with Bindu (Saira Banu), who is his neighbour. She snubs him and all his attempts to woo her are a failure. But he does have good friends Vidyapati (Kishore Kumar), who consoles him and offers him hope and advice.

Rumours have it that the song was conceived not in the music room but on the shooting floor, with Kishore Kumar being the father of the child. Even greater part of the lyrics, when not all of it, were supposedly written by him. Eyewitnesses say, it was his idea to use the Baul tune, which Pancham’s father often used in his compositions. The credits of the film and record though credit Rajinder Krishan and it is his name, which will feature here as well.

For playing role of Vidyapati, Producer of the movie Mehmood convinced kishore kumar by following him for one month as Kumar was not interested to do acting that time, however he agreed after Mehmood spend a whole night in front of his house asking him to do the role.

Kishore Kumar's character in the film was inspired by the personality of his uncle, Dhananjay Banerjee (a classical singer), and music director Khemchand Prakash.

Sunil Dutt and Mehmood feared getting overshadowed by Kishore Kumar as his character was getting more cheers then two leading characters in early screening of the movie, therefore Mehmood cut down some of Kumar's scene to tone it down a bit, however once the movie was released Kumar's character was most loved by the audience.

While filming 'Meri Bindu', the usual choreographer was not present. Kishore Kumar volunteered and the whole cast was briefed with the lyrics. He began dancing, mostly silly actions according to the lyrics and instructed rest to follow him. The following sequence is considered to be one of the most funny music videos in Indian Cinema.

*"Mere Bhole Balam"* lyrics by Rajendra Kishan, composed by R D Burman and sung superbly & melodiously by Kishore Kumar 🎤🎵🎶🎧
