Song of the Day

Let’s start the day with Rajshri Productions 1975 film *”Geet Gaata Chal”* produced by Tarachand Barjatya and directed by Hiren Nag.

The film starred Sachin & Sarika as the lead pair along with Khyati, Madan Puri, Leela Mishra, Urmila Bhatt and Padma Khanna.

The movie is a remake of 1965 Bengali movie Atithi.

There are some stories which you once hear cling to your mind and soul. You start thinking about it, empathizing with it, yearning for it and even start living it at times. Rabindranath Tagore's immortal short story Atithi is one such

Geet Gaata Chal is a Hindi film adaptation of this story.. And created by none other than Rajshri films who are the best in setting up rustic story settings. Top it up with natural performers and memorable music and you've got a classic in your hands! If only and...

... Only if, if stay true to the original story to its very end. The movie was so well developed by recreating the Bengal Lake environs into Rajasthan's dry and breezy ways. All the characters and scenes were so developed all the while sticking to the original script from Tagore.

But it stopped short of going from good to great by manipulating the ending. So much so that it doesn't feel convincing or even true to the protagonist's character. The creators intended to make the audience feel happy, but even without reading the original they feel something is amiss and quickly categorise it as a one-time watch.

While modifications like not having the friend as a child widow was ok, the ending conveyed the soul of the film.

Modifying it just took away the spirit of it.. It is still a great watch. I suggest to them viewer though to read the story after watching the film.. And watch the better and more recent recreation in "Stories by Rabindranath Tagore" of this immortal story.

*"Mangal Bhawan Amangal Haari"* lyrics and composed by Ravindra Jain and sung by Jaspal Singh 🎤🎵🎥🎶
